Contouring

A video artifact caused by excessive quantization during the compression process.

Contouring is a video compression artifact caused by excessive quantization. This artifact occurs when the number of bits that are output during the final digital processing stage is small enough for the luminance step corresponding to one bit to be visible on the display.
