The defocus transition is a type of transition accomplished by rolling the lens focus until the scene becomes blurred.

Passage of time within a scene can be suggested by refocusing the shot after alterations are made in the scene: change of costume, lighting, and other continuity elements. The defocus device has also been frequently employed in transitions to dream or fantasy sequences.
