Picmaker is an online application that allows you to create design elements without relying on a desktop application. The application is template-based, similar to Canva -- the best-known competitor in the field. While less known, Picmaker allows for more flexibility and creativity than most of its competition. The free version will store your images in the cloud and offers a wide range of design functions such as text effects. To create a YouTube video thumbnail using Picmaker, log in to your account. If you don't have a Picmaker account, create a new one. For the purpose of creating a YouTube thumbnail, the free version should cover most people's needs.

  1. From Picmaker's main screen, click the YouTube thumbnails option.
  2. Select a template whose layout fits your general needs on the left sidebar.
  3. Modify the elements as desired -- such as the background image and the text elements.
  4. Rename your project and save it to the cloud.
  5. Click the Download button to save the thumbnail in JPG format on your computer.
